Guidance for non-maintained special schools (NMSS), including children’s homes registered as special schools. It outlines how and why the Department for Education will intervene if a NMSS is underperforming or failing, including:

  • failure to meet national minimum standards
  • inadequate residential provision
  • inadequate financial health

A NMSS is a school for children with special educational needs, approved by the Secretary of State for Education under section 342 of the Education Act 1996.
