Details
The Council received an enquiry from an MP on behalf of a constituent concerning a possible relationship between exposure to silica and asbestos and development of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) - associated vasculitis.
Reviews of the available scientific literature for these issues are given in this report.
Earlier reports by the Council reviewed occupational exposure to crystalline silica and certain connective tissue diseases; ANCA-associated vasculitis was not included in the 2005 or the 2018 reviews. A substantial amount of research over the last 25 years is summarised which has indicated there is some evidence relating crystalline silica exposures to an increased risk of ANCA-associated vasculitis.
