Having access to up-to-date prices at the pumps helps drivers choose which petrol filling station to use, and leads to more competition, which benefits businesses and consumers.

As part of its road fuel market study, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) made 2 recommendations to the UK government:

  • a new statutory fuel finder scheme, which would give drivers access to live, station-by-station fuel prices

  • a new statutory monitoring body to hold the industry to account

The government accepted both recommendations, and asked the CMA to set up an interim voluntary scheme. This interim scheme is now active with price data available and will be updated when a retailer joins the scheme. Subject to parliamentary timings, the government’s aim is to launch the fuel finder scheme (‘Fuel Finder’) by the end of 2025.

If you work in the road fuels sector, read our open letter to stakeholders in the road fuel market published in August 2023, which outlines the interim voluntary scheme and more information about the CMA’s temporary road fuel price open data scheme.
