Road fuel price data scheme
Information about the CMA's temporary road fuel price open data scheme.
Introduction
The Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) road fuel market study made 2 recommendations to the UK government to address the weakening of competition it found since 2019:
- a new statutory fuel finder scheme, which would give drivers access to live, station-by-station fuel prices
- a new statutory monitoring body to hold the industry to account
The government accepted both recommendations, and asked the CMA to take action on a temporary basis, using our existing powers, while it progressed legislation. This page provides details of CMA work on the interim remedies regarding both pricing data and monitoring.
The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 was passed and gave the CMA the powers to implement the statutory monitoring function. The government is aiming to commence these powers by January 2025. The CMA stands ready to take on this new function as soon as the powers come into force.
The open data fuel finder scheme has not yet been put on a statutory footing. The government has committed to implementing a new statutory fuel finder scheme (‘Fuel Finder’) as quickly as possible. It has stated the Data (Use and Access) Bill introduced to Parliament in October 2024 will provide the legislative basis to set up Fuel Finder, and aims to launch Fuel Finder by the end of 2025.
