This revised direction requires the chair of the council’s improvement board to provide the Secretary of State with quarterly update reports on the council’s ongoing improvement work. The commissioner will receive papers but not attend improvement board meetings.

An independent report by the DfE-appointed Commissioner for Children’s Services in Wakefield recommended that the council be allowed to retain control of the delivery of children’s social care services subject to a 6 month and 12 month review of progress.

The commissioner was appointed following a report by Ofsted that judged the overall effectiveness of those services to be inadequate.

This direction replaces the earlier statutory direction issued to the council in August 2018.

This direction was revoked by DfE on 13 January 2022.
