Details
The Rural Connectivity Accelerator (RCA) programme aims to enhance our understanding of the connectivity needs of businesses in rural and Very Hard to Reach (VHTR) areas of the UK.
These pilots will explore the best ways to address barriers to deployment and adoption, and examine the potential of emerging connectivity solutions, including the combination of broadband, satellite and wireless networks.
The objectives are:
- Deploy and test the viability of hybrid/wireless networks
- Improve connectivity for businesses and workers in very hard to reach areas
- Demonstrate stackable use cases for the technology approach
Phase two: connectivity pilots
DSIT-funded connectivity pilots will run from Autumn 2024 to March 2025. The aim is to stimulate a diverse range of sectors including:
- tourism and charity
- transport (heritage rail and road)
- local authority and public sector
- agriculture
- digital
- environmental science
- public health
Phase one: discovery and development
The goal of this initial phase was to develop proposals for the delivery and funding of the rural connectivity pilots, based on detailed stakeholder insight. Following the closure of the discovery phase, DSIT changed the RCA project to focus on mission-critical objectives that have the greatest prospect of success and would yield robust outcomes.
Background
Advanced wireless connectivity is crucial for achieving the government’s policy objectives. However, rural regions often face a disparity in accessing innovative connectivity solutions compared to urban areas. This is primarily due to inherent geographical and commercial challenges.
There is significant potential for ‘hybrid’ connectivity solutions (integrating satellite and terrestrial infrastructure) to address the needs of remote locations. Despite the critical need, these technologies are still in the early trial stages. Additional research is needed to prove their practical application by businesses, and their technical integration with conventional terrestrial networks.
Th RCA aims to connect technology firms, wireless service providers, and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite operators to pilot hybrid networks within the UK’s rural landscapes. This initiative is designed to demonstrate technological advancements, evaluate novel methodologies, and stimulate economic development in rural communities. It aims to provide tangible solutions to overcome the barriers in adopting and implementing fixed, satellite, and advanced wireless technologies, particularly for businesses situated in rural and otherwise inaccessible areas.
By supporting government ambitions, these pilots will provide proof of concept for how innovative connectivity solutions can be adopted, demonstrating scalability, replicability, and sustainability in key sectors of the economy.
