Applies to England

Background

After the government announced funding through the Active Travel Fund to introduce School Streets, Kettlethorpe High School was approached to be part of a pilot scheme to introduce School Streets in the Wakefield district.

What they did

Following an initial consultation, a School Street was introduced in September 2021 for a trial period of up to 18 months under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO). The School Street was complemented by a package of measures including cycle parking and security registration, as well as a Park and Stride location at the local Asda.

Results / what happens next

Wakefield Council undertook monitoring and evaluation of the scheme, which found that:

  • 86.4% of the people who responded to the survey wanted to keep the School Street
  • 4.4 percentage point reduction in the number of children travelling to school by car
  • all the cars that entered the School Street had permits and parked in the school visitor car park
  • 100% of the students that were surveyed felt safer walking, cycling and scooting on Kettlethorpe Hall Drive
  • 100% of the students that were surveyed wanted to keep the School Street

The School Street has had a successful start and the council has identified opportunities to improve it and mitigate any impacts of traffic on surrounding streets, through further promotion and expansion of Park and Stride options.

This really has made a real difference to the safety of our pupils as well as staff and the local community. Kettlethorpe Hall Drive is calmer and pupils can enter and leave school knowing that the highway access is supervised to their advantage. Absolutely great.
