Smart meter-enabled tariffs comparison project: Smarter Tariffs – Smarter Comparisons
Project to develop tools to demonstrate how energy suppliers' offers of smart tariffs, including export, electric vehicle and time of use tariffs, can be compared by consumers.

Details
The half-hourly consumption and price data recorded by smart meters enables innovative products such as export tariffs, electric vehicle tariffs, and dynamic ‘time-of-use’ tariffs that reward consumers for using energy away from peak times or when there is excess clean electricity available.
The Smarter Tariffs – Smarter Comparisons project funded the development of an open-source tool to demonstrate how these smart meter-enabled tariffs can be compared, giving consumers the information they need to switch to the best deals and integrate new low carbon technologies.
The project delivered a range of outputs including:
- demonstrating how, in a smart energy system, innovative tariffs can be used to offer consumers a greater range of products and services, including dynamic pricing
- an open-source prototype
- research on how to encourage consumer engagement with smart tariffs and enable customers to make informed decisions
- demonstration of how smart meter data can be integrated into comparison tools to improve consumer experience and the accuracy of comparisons
The open-source prototype
The open-source prototype can be used:
- as part of a tariff or energy product comparison service (such as a price comparison website)
- to demonstrate low carbon technology products
Any organisation can use the tool code. The demonstration prototype can already implement its main functions and is ready for further development and integration to support specific market applications. While energy suppliers are currently limited in their ability to offer attractive smart tariffs, low carbon technologies are being rolled out at large scale. As suppliers continue to develop a range of competitive smart tariffs, the tool will give consumers the information they need to switch to the best deals and integrate new products and services including energy storage, smart charging for electric vehicles, and electric heating.

The project was funded under the BEIS Energy Innovation Programme and led by BEIS’ Smart Metering Implementation Programme. The Energy Innovation Programme has been succeeded by the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP).
