Smart Meter System based Internet of Things applications programme (closed to applications)
The Smart Meter System based Internet of Things Applications Programme aims to support innovation to determine the feasibility of, and trial, Smart Meter System based IoT sensor devices.

Details
The Smart Meter System (SMS) based Internet of Things applications programme (of up to £1.8 million) aims to determine the technical and commercial feasibility of SMS-based IoT sensor devices (and any supporting data management tools that may be required).
These devices are required to communicate via the GB Smart Meter System and Data Communications Company (DCC) network. Funding was provided to enable successful applicants, working with an energy supplier(s), to design, build, test and trial the IoT sensor devices.
The programme consisted of 2 phases:
- Phase 1: feasibility, identifying applications and establishing the feasibility of solutions comprising IoT sensors and supporting data management tools suitable for operation within the Smart Meter System and DCC network
- Phase 2: develop and trial, further develop the proposed technical solutions and build and deploy demonstration system and devices
Background
Internet of Things (IoT) describes electrical / electronic devices (or groups of such devices) that are embedded with sensors, processing ability, software, and other technologies that connect and exchange data with other devices and systems over the internet or other communications networks.
The GB Smart Meter System (SMS) is home to rich energy usage data; data which is currently held on consumers’ smart meters. The SMS has existing capability also, to act as a return path for additional simple data items such as temperature, humidity or sub meter readings.
By itself, or when combined with existing energy data, such additional data acquired by an SMS and Data Communication Company (DCC) network route could provide significant benefits related to the monitoring and management of Internet of Things devices, at minimal additional cost.
By developing IoT sensor devices and supporting data management tools that use the SMS’s DCC network, funded Projects are intended to increase options for uses such as monitoring of “smart building” devices, DNO infrastructure assets, and industrial processes; and other uses which support the aims of the Flexibility Innovation Programme.
This programme is part of the up to £65 million overarching Flexibility Innovation Programme which seeks to enable large-scale widespread electricity system flexibility through smart, flexible, secure, and accessible technologies and markets. The Flexibility Innovation Programme will fund innovation across a range of key smart energy applications, and sits within the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP).
