Details

The Department for Transport’s speed limit appraisal tool will help councils to assess the full costs and benefits of any proposed local speed limit schemes. As well as casualties and other traffic effects, we have made particular efforts to build into the tool effects that cannot be monetised, such as those that enhance quality of life.

To install the tool, run the installation file ‘SLAT_Installation_V1.0.3.exe’ and follow the presented dialogues:

You may need administrator rights, depending on your local IT rules and regulations. If you experience problems when trying to install the tool, you should refer in the first instance to your IT support. Full details are in our ‘Speed limit appraisal tool user guidance’.

If you receive the message ‘This installation requires Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7’ you must run it in compatibility mode for Windows 7. This can be accessed by right clicking on the installer, opening the ‘Properties’ window, checking the tick box labelled ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and selecting ‘Windows 7’ from the list. You can then press ‘OK’ and run the installer again.

Users may find it helpful to have an example set of data:

This example data includes populated output files and input data as Excel spreadsheets. Unzip the example data file into the tool’s studies area (standard location: C:\Speed_Limit_Appraisal_Studies).
