UK and South Korea memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance industrial and energy cooperation

The UK-South Korea Industry and Energy Dialogue will support bilateral cooperation between the 2 countries on energy, science and innovation, business and new technologies.

Sarah Munby, Permanent Secretary for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) met Dr Jin-Kyu Park, Vice Minister for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) of the Republic of Korea on 24 September 2021. They discussed bilateral cooperation and signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) establishing a dialogue between the departments.

The BEIS-MOTIE Industry and Energy Dialogue will support cooperation between the UK and the Republic of Korea on a range of areas including:

  • energy, including the environment, low carbon growth and climate change
  • science, research, and innovation
  • business, trade, and investment, including small and medium enterprises and advanced manufacturing
  • emerging technology and innovation friendly regulation

The dialogue will act as a steering board for all existing bilateral collaboration between the 2 departments, including the Science, Technology and Innovation Partnership and the Civil Nuclear Dialogue.

The Permanent Secretary and Vice Minister spoke about ambitions for COP26 and achieving net zero emissions. They discussed the importance of delivering a clean energy transition as well as future partnership opportunities in areas such as vaccine production and renewable energy technologies.

The dialogue will be held biennially and co-chaired by Sarah Munby and Vice Minister Park, with the first meeting in 2022.
