UK joint policy statement on extended producer responsibility for packaging

A joint policy statement from Defra, the Scottish Government, the Welsh Government and DAERA in Northern Ireland on extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging

Documents

Details

This joint policy statement outlines the intended environmental effects of EPR for packaging and the methods to achieve them. The key outcomes include:

  • the use of environmentally sustainable packaging
  • the prevention of packaging becoming waste
  • an increase in the reuse of packaging, and in the quantity and quality of packaging materials recycled
  • a reduction in the packaging material placed on the market

The four nations view the delivery of these outcomes, facilitated by PackUK (the EPR for packaging Scheme Administrator), as crucial to supporting the transition to a circular economy while maximising the carbon efficiencies associated with the lifecycle of packaging materials. The statement also details the outcomes and deliverables that PackUK must achieve in the first year of the scheme, the core governance documents they must publish, and the deadlines for these publications.
