This guidance is for users and providers of synthetic nucleic acids and benchtop equipment that synthesises nucleic acids. It supports the safe study and engineering of existing or novel biological systems and helps unlock the exciting benefits of the technology across:

  • chemical and materials
  • low carbon fuels
  • agriculture and food
  • waste and environment

Background

The 2023 UK Biological Security Strategy and National Vision for Engineering Biology set out an ambition for the UK to be a world leader in responsible innovation in engineering biology. Promoting screening helps to deliver this commitment by:

  • championing the UK’s pro-innovation culture
  • guiding the use of synthetic nucleic acid for legitimate purposes
  • mitigating risks of accidental misuse
