UKSF Infrastructure Scheme projects: grants awarded in round 2 of the scheme

The following organisations have been awarded grants through the Infrastructure Scheme round 2 to:

  • strengthen the seafood supply chain
  • bring social and economic benefits
  • reduce the seafood industry’s impact on the environment

1. AGD Duff & Partners Limited

Location: Aberdeen, Scotland

Award amount: £380,360.16

1.1 Summary

Defra has awarded over £380,000 to AGD Duff & Partners Limited to buy equipment, including an in-house smoking facility and weighing, grading and skinny machinery to increase their processing capability in Aberdeenshire.

The project also includes:

  • increasing its freezer storage capability with around 300 pallets of cod, squid, haddock, plaice, sole and mackerel to be stored at any time
  • investment in renewable energy sources and reduction in road miles to reduce CO2 emissions by 29,000kg per year

2. Alisrose Limited

Location: Peterhead, Scotland

Award amount: £853,001.61

2.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £853,000 to Alisrose Limited to expand the capacity of a wastewater treatment plant that serves 3 of the main pelagic processors in Peterhead, alongside a shellfish processor and 2 local whitefish processors. The project is to expand capacity at the wastewater plant to facilitate the expansion of capacity at the processors. This project will increase the waste-water processing capability by 60%.

3. Brighton & Newhaven Fish Sales Limited

Location: Portsmouth, England

Award amount: £362,975.48

3.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £363,000 to Brighton & Newhaven Fish Sales Ltd to regenerate Camber Dock Fish Market’s onshore facilities. The project will improve cold storage and freezer facilities and provide saltwater tanks for shellfish to add a minimum of 15% to catch value. This project will:

  • create an ice plant for fishers to use at sea to keep catch fresh
  • improve facilities at the market to increase sales

4. DR Colin & Son

Location: Berwickshire, Scotland

Award amount: £650,802.76

4.1 Summary

Defra has awarded over £650,000 to DR Colin & Son to purchase processing equipment to improve yield and throughput of crab and shellfish at their factory. The project will:

  • increase processing capability by 50% to increase export sales across the supply chain
  • invest in new technology to reduce energy consumption by 40%

5. Enterfoods

Location: Fraserburgh, Scotland

Award amount: £724,318.50

5.1 Summary

Defra has awarded over £724,000 to Enterfoods to invest in a new plant that will boost their seafood processing capability in Fraserburgh through increasing the cold storage and blast freezing services for the local supply chain.

The project will:

  • increase export of specific species, for example squid
  • reduce seafood processing waste
  • invest in efficient refrigeration plant and renewable energy solutions to reduce energy consumption by 30%

6. Fastnet Fish

Location: Grimsby, England

Award amount: £1,277,692.29

6.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £1.2 million to Fastnet Fish to increase cold store capability in the existing facility by 150%, by installing racking units which will maximise product throughput, without incurring additional energy costs. The project aims to substantially reduce electricity usage by installing renewable energy mechanisms to reduce carbon emissions and create environmentally sustainable energy solutions.

7. Fleetwood Fish Merchants Association

Location: Fleetwood, England

Award amount: £2,839,931.04

7.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £2.8 million to Fleetwood Fish Merchants Association to fit out and upgrade the current shell and core food processing units to the required standards with the aim of creating a more sustainable industry. The project will:

  • increase output by 10% in the first year with anticipated increases of 5% per year thereafter
  • will save a total of 92,797 kilowatt hours per annum and a total of 28.56 tonnes of CO2 per annum
  • create 78 new jobs

8. Flo-Gro Systems Limited

Location: Lincolnshire, England

Award amount: £5,000,000.00

8.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £5 million to Flo-Gro Systems Ltd to build a new aquaculture facility in Lincolnshire to produce fresh king prawns (Pacific Vannamei) for the UK market. The facility will include a hatchery, and processing and packing equipment. The project will deliver pioneering technology, sustainable energy generation and innovative farm practice and will:

  • have the capability to produce at least 2,500 tonnes of fresh king prawns per annum
  • ensure energy consumption savings by installing roof and ground-mounted solar panels integrated with an onsite battery system to redeploy at night

9. For The Love Of The Sea Limited (Câr-Y-Môr)

Location: Pembrokeshire, Wales

Award amount: £1,110,998.61

9.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £1.1 million to For the Love of the Sea (Câr-Y-Môr), a Community Benefit Society based in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. The project will expand seaweed production facilities by developing a seaweed processing unit with storage, equipment, shop and an educational hub. The project will:

  • increase the storage of bait (1.5 tonnes), frozen produce (1 tonne), fresh produce (500kg) and live products (300kg)
  • reduce the company’s carbon footprint from 31.9 tonnes CO2 to at least 24.7 tonnes CO2 by March 2025

10. Inverlussa Shellfish Co Limited

Location: Isle of Mull, Scotland

Award amount: £230,727.98

10.1 Summary

Defra has awarded over £230,000 to Inverlussa to improve growing and storage facilities at their mussel farm on the Isle of Mull.  The project includes a wind turbine, a mussel growing rope and the construction of onshore facilities. The project will:

  • increase harvest output of mussels by approximately 10%
  • reduce its grid usage by up to as close to 100% as possible through its purchase of a wind turbine

11. Langstone Harbour Board

Location: Hampshire, England

Award amount: £233,450.43

11.1 Summary

Defra has awarded over £233,000 to Langstone Harbour Board to upgrade the Eastney pontoon. The project includes upgrades to the pontoon, a slipway trailer and telehandler to increase the quantity of catch landed in Langstone. The project will:

  • protect the Langstone fishing fleet and staff employed at the harbour
  • invest in the pontoon to reduce transportation of the catch saving around 219 tonnes of CO2 per year

12. Lerwick Port Authority

Location: Shetland, Scotland

Award amount: £450,759.24

12.1 Summary

Defra has awarded over £450,000 to Lerwick to reclaim land to create a laydown area. Part of this area will be developed by constructing a new cold storage facility, and part by creating an area for storage and handling of refrigerated containers. The project includes the costs for the groundworks and construction. The project will:

  • increase the current processing volumes by a minimum of 40%
  • increase its on-site cold storage which is expected to achieve an energy efficiency of approximately 25%
  • reduce vessel carbon emissions due to the increase in landing capability

13. Milford Haven Port Authority

Location: Pembrokeshire, Wales

Award amount: £2,643,291.57

13.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £2.6 million to Milford Haven Port Authority to deliver a suite of interlinked, major regeneration works to Milford Fish Docks. The project will:

  • boost the capability of Milford Fish Docks tenants and the inshore fleet to sustainably land, process and add value to produce for local, regional and international markets
  • build a new pontoon for 25 to 30 inshore fishing vessels

14. MOWI Scotland Limited

Location: Ardessie, Scotland

Award amount: £5,000,000.00

14.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £5 million to MOWI Scotland Limited to establish a new, state-of the-art, brood stock farm at Mowi Scotland’s Ardessie site. The brood stock are the breeding fish which produce the next generation of eggs (ova).

The facility will be a recirculating aquaculture system, including the construction of new buildings, and aquaculture equipment such as chillers, tanks, filters and an ice machine. The project will produce 25 to 30 million eyed (fertilised) eggs (ova) annually.

15. New England Seafood International

Location: Grimsby, England

Award amount: £3,774,667.53

15.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £3.8 million to New England Seafood International to deliver a state-of-the-art processing facility in Grimsby. The project includes the purchase of processing equipment, the extension and refurbishment of the current building and installation of a refrigeration plant. The project will:

  • reduce road miles and save on energy consumption
  • grow its output by 162% over 4 years
  • create 263 jobs

16. Northbay Pelagic Limited

Location: Peterhead, Scotland

Award amount: £5,000,000.00

16.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £5 million to Northbay Pelagic Limited to increase its capability in both processing and cold storage. The project includes the purchase of processing equipment, the construction of a cold store extension, blast freezer and the move toward renewable energy sources. The project will:

  • increase the processing and production capacity from 25,000 tonnes of mackerel and herring a year to 35,000 tonnes
  • reduce the fuel consumption, by approximately 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year
  • produce around 25% of electricity demand through investment in renewable energy sources
  • sustain the 60-core staff currently employed at its processing facility with an additional 40 jobs being created

17. Northern Ireland Fishery Harbour Authority

Location: County Down, Northern Ireland

Award amount: £2,644,292.12

17.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £2.6 million to Northern Ireland Fishery Harbour Authority to replace and enhance the existing boat cradle and winch, used to pull fishing vessels out of the water for maintenance at Portavogie Harbour. The new facility will be designed to take a larger range of vessels both larger and smaller. The project will:

  • install a new winch and cradle system, to replace the existing cradle that is only used at 30% capacity due to the limited range of boats it can support
  • install PV panels, creating a CO2 emission saving of 3.02 tonnes per annum

18. Scottish Sea Farms Limited

Location: Barcaldine, Scotland

Award amount: £5,000,000.00

18.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £5 million to Scottish Sea Farms Limited to build a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) at an existing post smolt facility in Barcaldine, Argyll. The facility will have the capability to receive 6 million salmon smolts a year from the existing smolt facility. The project includes the construction and internal fit out of the new building and the RAS system. The project will:

  • maintain a controlled environment with optimal conditions for fish health, welfare and growth
  • minimise water and energy use for heating and cooling by treating and recycling up to 99% of production water
  • reduce fossil fuels at Scottish Sea Farms by around 25%

19. Seafish Processing Limited

Location: Grimsby, England

Award amount: £315,051.62

19.1 Summary

Defra has awarded over £315,000 to Seafish Processing Limited to expand its processing facility. The project will include the refurbishment of their current building to install a new cold store, blast chiller and fish-debone and separator station. The project will:

  • increase the processing and production capability by 40%
  • increase its capability to export
  • remove a generator and diesel shunt process to eradicate carbon emissions

20. Shoreham Port

Location: Shoreham, England

Award amount: £1,204,158.00

20.1 Summary

Defra has awarded £1.2 million to Shoreham Port to redevelop the inshore fishing marina. The objectives of the project are to secure the viability of inshore fishing in the locality, protecting skills, and creating employment for future generations. The project will:

  • create 51 berths, increasing overall quay space by 170%
  • introduce shore power capability across all 51 new berths

21. Tarbert (Loch Fyne) Harbour Authority

Location: Tarbert, Scotland

Award amount: £407,395.03

21.1 Summary

Defra has awarded over £407,000 to Tarbert Harbour Authority to streamline the fish quay facility ensuring it is fit for purpose for current and emerging needs and can deliver a quality service to the fishing vessels of Argyll and Bute who specialise in creel fishing for high value live shellfish, and traditional trawling vessels. The project will include:

  • a winch and davit for loading and unloading vessels
  • a new ice machine
  • storage
  • maintenance
