Statistics on journey times to key services in England, by car, cycling, public transport and walking, and walking only.

In 2019, the average minimum journey time to access a range of 8 key local services from where people live was:

  • 10 minutes by car
  • 16 minutes by cycle
  • 18 minutes by public transport or walking
  • 28 minutes by walking only

Urban areas typically have lower minimum travel times across all services and modes of transport. The average minimum travel time to key services by mode is:

  • between 9 (car) and 22 (walking only) minutes in urban areas
  • between 14 (car) and 55 (walking only) minutes in rural areas
