Details

In 2014:

  • the total road length in Great Britain was estimated to be 245.8 thousand miles, an increase of 4.9 thousand miles (2.0%) over ten years.
  • minor roads made up 87.3% of total road length, with major roads (motorways and ‘A’ roads) making up 12.7%.

Statistics on road length do not reflect alterations to the width or number of lanes on sections of road. For an indication of upgrades or improvements of this kind being completed on the Strategic Road Network in England please refer to separately published statistics in Table RDE0104
