in Great Britain and England for the year 2023.

Overall traffic levels in 2023 were higher than 2022 but remain below pre-pandemic 2019 levels. Motor vehicle traffic on Great Britain’s roads increased by 2.2% between 2022 and 2023, to 330.8 billion vehicle miles. Traffic in 2023 was 2.3% lower than when compared to 2019 pre-pandemic levels.

In 2023:

  • car traffic levels were 251.3 billion vehicle miles, 3.0% higher than 2022 and 4.4% lower than 2019
  • van traffic was 57.8 billion vehicle miles, unchanged from 2022 and 8.1% higher than 2019
  • lorry traffic levels were 16.9 billion vehicle miles, 2.5% lower than 2022 and 1.6% lower than 2019
  • England’s Strategic Road Network carried 95.8 billion vehicle miles of traffic, 2.3% higher than 2022 and 1.0% lower than 2019
