Statistics on motor vehicles that were registered for the first time during 2021 and those that were licensed at the end of December 2021.

Recent trends in new vehicle registrations have been heavily affected by the measures implemented from March 2020 onwards to limit the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

During 2021, in the United Kingdom, there were:

• 2.3 million vehicles registered for the first time
• 327,000 plug-in vehicles registered for the first time

At the end of December 2021, there were:

• 40.3 million licensed vehicles in the United Kingdom
