Find software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Use this page to check which software works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

You will have to use commercial software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax if you need to use it from 6 April 2026 or 6 April 2027.

If you have an agent, talk to them about your choice of software before you decide.

You should also check with the software provider that your chosen product suits your needs.

If you are volunteering to help us test the service, ask your software provider if their software will work with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax during either the 2024 to 2025 tax year, or the 2025 to 2026 tax year.

As the testing phase progresses, more software products will become available.

How software will help you

Your chosen software will help you to:

  • create, store and correct digital records of your business income and expenses

  • send quarterly updates

  • submit your tax return by 31 January after the end of the tax year (this will also include any other sources of income or gains that you need to declare)

  • receive information, such as your tax estimates, from HMRC

You can choose to use either:

  • a single software product that meets all your needs

  • more than one software product, that when used together will meet all your needs

How to choose the right software

When choosing software, you should think about your specific needs, for example, whether you want to keep using your record-keeping software.

Software that creates digital records

Some compatible software lets you create digital records of your business income and expenses.

You might do this by:

  • manually entering the records into the software

  • connecting the software to an online business bank account, or data capture software

The compatible software can then create digital records, using the information you provide. You should always check that the digital records are accurate.

These types of software may also allow you to send quarterly updates and submit your tax returns to HMRC.

Software that connects to your records

If you decide to keep using your current spreadsheets or accounting software, you can connect them to software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

This is known as bridging software.

Submissions to HMRC

When you are using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you will need to make two types of submission to HMRC:

  • send quarterly updates

  • submit your tax return

Some software can submit both, but other products will only do one so it’s important to check first.

For example, you might create your own digital records and send your quarterly updates but still want your agent to submit your tax return. This means you would only need software that sends quarterly updates.

The list of available software sets out the submissions that will be possible for each software product, during the 2025 to 2026 tax year.

If you have an agent, talk to them about your choice of software before you decide.

Income sources

You will need to use software for your business income sources. This means income from:

  • self-employment

  • UK property

  • foreign property

Some software will be able to report all business income sources, whilst others may focus on a specific source. For example, there are products that are designed specifically for landlords.

You may also need to report personal income sources, such as income from savings or dividends.

For the remainder of the 2024 to 2025 and 2025 to 2026 tax years, it will not be possible to use your HMRC online services account to submit your personal income sources.

You should make sure your software can report all business and personal income sources.

You can find further guidance about how to finalise your Income Tax position, without using your HMRC online services account.

Software that supports your accounting period

If you want to use an accounting period that runs from 1 April to 31 March, you’ll need to choose software that supports calendar update periods. You should check with the software provider if their product supports calendar update periods.
