Tell HMRC if you have a new job or more than one job
How to update your details online if you have started with a new employer and you think your tax code is wrong.
Give us feedback.
We need your help to improve and to make sure GOV.UK works well for you. You can give us feedback about this guidance to help make GOV.UK better.
When you start a new job, your employer gives HMRC your income details. This is used to calculate your tax code. If you have more than one job you will have a tax code for each employment.
If we do not get your income details in time, or you decide not to share this information with your new employer you may be put on a temporary emergency tax code.
If you have a new job you should:
- give your new employer your P45
- fill in the starter checklist if you do not have a P45 or decide not to share all your income details with your new employer
Check your details online
Your new employment details will be available to view within 6 weeks after your first pay day.
You can use the PAYE section of HMRC online services or the HMRC app to check:
- HMRC has details of all your current employers
- your estimated income for the year is what you think you will earn
- only one employer is using the 1257L tax code at any one time
Using the HMRC online service
- Sign in to HMRC online services.
- Go to the ‘Pay As You Earn (PAYE)’ section.
- Select ‘check current tax year’ to view your PAYE Income Tax Summary for 6 April to 5 April.
Using the HMRC app
- Download the HMRC app.
- Go to the ‘Pay As You Earn (PAYE)’ section.
Update your details if they are wrong or missing
If your details are wrong or missing, you can use the HMRC online services or the HMRC app to:
- update your employer details
- add a missing employer
- tell us when an employment ended
- update your estimated income with an estimated amount for the full year or using recent amounts from a payslip
If you have other details to update you can tell HMRC about a change in your:
- employment income
- pension income
- company benefits like a company car or medical insurance
Keeping your tax code up to date helps make sure you pay the correct amount of tax. This makes it less likely you will pay too much or too little tax.
After you update your details
Not all changes you tell HMRC about will affect your tax code. We will tell your employer or pension provider if your tax code changes. Your next payslip should show your new tax code and any adjustments if you were paying the wrong amount of tax.
When you sign up for paperless updates you will get a message if your tax code changes. You can view these updates in the:
- messages section of your HMRC online account
- communication section of your HMRC app
