CSLM5000 - background: data protection act: contents

The Data Protection Act 2018 controls how your personal information is used by organisations, businesses or the government.

Under the provisions of the Act individuals have the right to

  • find out what information the government and other organisations store about you
  • be informed how your data is used 
  • access personal data
  • have incorrect data updated
  • have data erased
  • stop or restrict the processing of your data 
  • allow you to get and reuse your data for different services 
  • object to how your data is processed in certain circumstances 

The Data Protection Unit DPU is responsible for all administrative aspects of the DPA within the Department.

You can obtain information about specific items of data protection

  • by requesting it from your Data Protection Officer (DPO) or from the DPU
  • by requesting it from the company secretary if there is no DPO
