Tell DVLA you've sold, transferred or bought a vehicle

Bought a vehicle

You must tax the vehicle before driving it, or declare that it’s off the road (a SORN). The tax is not transferred to you when you buy the vehicle.

The person you bought the vehicle from should give you the green ‘new keeper’ slip so you can tax the vehicle.

They should then post the log book (V5C) to DVLA or tell DVLA online you’re the new keeper.

If the seller gives you the log book

Fill in:

  • section 2 with your name and address if you have a new style log book (with multi-coloured numbered blocks on the front cover)
  • section 6 if you have the older style log book

Send your log book to DVLA.

If you do not have a UK address

The person you bought the vehicle from should give you the whole log book so you can register the vehicle in another country.

What happens next

The vehicle’s registered keeper will be removed from DVLA records. You’ll:

  • become the new keeper
  • be sent a new log book

You must tax the vehicle before you can use it on the road.

If your new V5C has not arrived

If it’s been 4 weeks since the V5C was registered, contact DVLA.

You must tell DVLA within 6 weeks of registering the vehicle if you have not received your V5C.

If you tell DVLA after 6 weeks, you’ll have to pay £25 to get a replacement.

If the seller does not have the log book

DVLA advises that you should not buy a vehicle that does not have a log book.

If you’ve bought a vehicle without a log book, download form V62 and send it to DVLA to register the vehicle in your name.

You’ll have to pay £25.
