The Science & Innovation Network (SIN) in Lithuania and other Baltic States works to build bilateral relationships between local and UK government ministries, academic institutions and science, technology, and innovation (ST&I) organisations.

SIN’s work aims to deepen mutually beneficial ST&I cooperation to increase prosperity, sustainability and security in the UK, the Baltics and beyond.

The UK was Lithuania’s (as well as Latvia’s and Estonia’s) top 7 partner, by collaborating links under Horizon (EU’s research and innovation funding) programme from 2014 to 2020. Cooperation continues through the Horizon Europe programme.

Responsibilities and priorities

SIN Baltics’ (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) priorities include:

  • enabling policy exchanges between the UK and Baltic States to support UK values, reducing barriers to open international science and technology collaboration, and sharing best practice
  • stimulating strategic science, innovation and technology collaborations with the Baltic States to benefit the UK and fulfil wider policy goals
  • providing intelligence to the UK government on emerging issues, opportunities and developments to inform and shape UK policy

SIN Baltics’ work concentrates on 3 thematic areas across the region:

  • critical and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), digital governance, and future telecoms
  • climate and energy, especially clean energy
  • life sciences, especially public health
