Planned road works in the North West: summary for Monday, 11 January to Sunday, 17 January 2016
Summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week.
The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday, 8 January, and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.
M53 Moreton Spur
A 9 week resurfacing project started in December. The work features overnight closures of the M53 at junction 2 including slip roads and the main carriageway (10pm to 5am each night; week nights only).
M6 junctions 16 to 19
Pre-construction work for the smart motorway upgrade is underway – typically with 1 or 2 lanes closed overnight between junctions in both directions and or mobile lane closures along short sections of carriageway. For more information, visit the scheme website.
M6 junctions 19 to 20
Traffic management for a £14.5 million programme of bridge repairs and new safety barriers has now been set out with narrow lanes, 50 mph speed limit and use of the hard shoulder as a running lane in places. For more information, visit the scheme website.
M6 Junction 34 Lancaster
Lancashire County Council work off the motorway on the Heysham Link project requires a lane 1 and hard shoulder closure in both directions on the motorway around junction 34. For more information, visit the scheme website.
M60 Junction 8 Sale to M62 Junction 20 Rochdale
A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers. A series of overnight carriageway closures will be taking place from Monday.
The anticlockwise side of the M60 will be closed overnight between junctions 18 and 17 on Monday (11 January) and between junctions 17 and 14 on Tuesday (12 January). The clockwise carriageway will then be closed overnight between junctions 14 and 17 on Wednesday (13 January) and between junctions 17 and 18 on Thursday (14 January).
The M62 will also be closed overnight in both directions between junctions 19 and 20 on Saturday (16 January). All of the closures will take place between 10pm and 6am, with clearly-signed diversions in place.

A5036 Litherland
A £1.7 million project to resurface the main road to the Port of Liverpool is due to finish in February. A 2 ½ mile stretch of the A5036 is being resurfaced from the junction with the M57 and the M58, known as Switch Island, to the junction with Hawthorne Road. All of the work will be carried out overnight to keep disruption to drivers to a minimum, and clearly-signed diversions will be in place when short stretches of the road are closed.
A5117 Resurfacing
Resurfacing is taking place all next week between Parkgate Road and Bridle Lane, including some resurfacing of Dunkirk roundabout. Overnight closures of the A5117 and A494 will be needed with localised signed diversion routes in place.
A5117 New Footway/ Cycleway
Overnight work has started to provide a new shared footway and cycleway on the A5117, between its 2 junctions with Powey Lane. The new route will improve safety as well as connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists. The work is taking place between 9pm and 5am each night - sometimes with temporary traffic lights in place – and is scheduled to last for 8 weeks.
A556 Knutsford to Bowdon
A £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. A temporary 40mph speed limit is currently in place between Bucklow Hill and Bowdon, and the new dual carriageway is expected to open in winter 2016/17. A56 Haslingden
Postponed work to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians near the junction with the A680 will now start tomorrow (Saturday, 9 January) - with new steel safety barriers and better pedestrian crossing arrangements including a new crossing island. Overnight – 8pm to 5am – lane closures will be in place during the week and around the clock at weekends. Some full carriageway closures on Friday and Sunday nights will also be needed to install, adjust or remove traffic management with clearly-signed diversions in place. The scheme is now due to be completed in March.
A590 Lindale Hill
Work started in November to install new safety barriers will resume on Sunday (10 January) and are due to last for a further 3 weeks. The westbound carriageway will be closed from 8pm on Sunday night until 6am on Monday morning to install traffic management for the project which will involve the closure of 1 lane on the westbound carriageway until the project is complete.
A590 Brettargh Holt
Wear and tear repairs have been taking place along the westbound carriageway between Brettargh Holt roundabout and the junction with the A6. Work will resume on Monday (11 January) with the first of 6 overnight – 8pm to 6am - closures of the westbound carriageway between Brettargh Holt roundabout and just beyond the entry slip road onto the A6. A590 Greenodd
Lane 1 of the eastbound carriageway just west of Greenodd roundabout is currently closed until further notice while we undertake a survey of the embankment.
A595 Lillyhall to A66 at Dobies
A £500,000 drainage project started in November will resume on Monday (11 January). The work is weather dependent but is due to last for 6 weeks. Temporary traffic lights will be used during the day with a northbound road closure overnight and a signed diversion in place.
A66 Burns to Briery Interchange footway works
Work will begin on Monday (11 January) to install a new footpath linking the A66 and A591 as well as carry out carriageway repairs including strengthening and resurfacing. The work is due to last for 7 weeks and will take place between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day with temporary traffic lights in place. The westbound exit slip will be closed for 2 weeks from the end of January for resurfacing works with a diversion in place via Crosthwaite roundabout.
A66 M6 to Kemplay Roundabout
A lane of the eastbound carriageway was closed for utility company works. This has now been reduced to a layby closure. The work is due to be completed by the end of January.
A66 Stainburn by-pass
Overnight work starts on Monday (11 January) to resurface the carriageway between Chapel Brow and Stainburn roundabouts near Workington. The carriageway will be closed in both directions between 8pm and 6am each night with a signed diversion in place.
A66 Appleby
A £1.76 million carriageway reconstruction project near Crackenthorpe began in mid-October. The work will now last until Friday, 22 January.
A66 Bassenthwaite Lake
Due to flooding and damage to the carriageway, the westbound dual carriageway is currently closed and awaiting repair. A contraflow system has been installed so drivers travelling westbound can use a lane of the eastbound carriageway.
A66 Troutbeck
Work to resurface and repair drainage along a section of the A66 west of the new junction lay-out at Troutbeck started in November. The work will be now be completed by Friday (15 January).
