Details

This prison service instruction (PSI) gives guidance and instructions on when and how to make deductions from prisoner wages as part of the Prisoners’ Earnings Act 1996 (PEA). It applies to the specific rules around prisoners earning money while on temporary release in the community.

It covers:

  • when the PEA rules apply
  • the process for removing money from prisoner wages
  • how to keep prisoners updated on how much has been removed from their wages
  • situations where deductions can be reduced or stopped
  • how to deal with complaints or appeals from prisoners

This is a current PSI. It came into effect on 20 December 2011. It was last updated on 11 February 2016.
