This prison service order (PSO) sets out the requirements for governors to ensure arrangements are made for clinical governance in prison. These arrangements are designed to ensure that prison healthcare is effectively managed, monitored and improved and must include:

  • identifying a clinical governance lead
  • creating a framework document setting out clinical governance arrangements
  • ensuring a baseline assessment is carried out with prison health regional teams
  • reviewing progress annually

This guidance covers:

  • understanding clinical governance
  • stakeholders and roles
  • transfer of responsibilities to the Department of Health
  • support and resources

It also includes a suggested framework for managing clinical governance in prisons.

This is a current PSO. It came into effect on 16 January 2003.
