Details

This prison service order (PSO) describes how prisons should handle requests from prisoners to change their name. This includes after a change in marital status, for religious reasons or for psychological reasons.

The PSO contains guidance on:

  • considering a prisoner’s request to change their name
  • actions that must be taken when recognising a prisoner’s new name

This is a current PSO. It came into effect on 25 September 2003 and was last updated on 24 September 2004.
