This prison service instruction (PSI) contains guidelines for prisons on protecting and safeguarding adult prisoners from abuse and neglect.

It covers:

• identifying and meeting a prisoner’s needs
• preventing abuse or neglect
• reporting suspected abuse or neglect
• investigating and dealing with reports of abuse or neglect
• monitoring and analysis of safeguarding information
• engaging with local authorities

This is a current PSI. It came into effect on 1 April 2015 and was last updated on 16 December 2016.
