This prison service instruction (PSI) and probation instruction (PI) describes how prison and probation staff should work with offenders to create, monitor and review sentence plans. This plan outlines the activities that an offender should undertake while in prison and on probation to:

  • reduce the risk of reoffending or causing serious harm
  • help them prepare for and cope with life outside of prison

Sentence plans include things like education and work experience, health and wellbeing, interpersonal skills and practical considerations and interventions to reduce risk of harm and re-offending.

This guidance covers:

  • setting clear and appropriate objectives
  • identifying the right activities
  • the planning process
  • reviewing and ending a sentence plan

This is a current PSI and PI. It came into effect on 24 October 2014 and was last updated on 5 October 2015.
