Details

This prison service instruction (PSI) describes when and how the security classification of high security prisoners should be reviewed. It covers:

  • category A prisoners (adult men)
  • restricted status prisoners (young adults and women)

It describes how prisoners should be assessed and given a category to reflect how likely they are to try and escape and the risks they pose to staff, prisoners and the public.

It includes guidance on ensuring prisoners are treated in a fair, consistent and objective way and that appropriate security measures are applied lawfully, safely, fairly, proportionately and decently.

This is a current PSI. It came into effect on 27 March 2013 and was last updated on 10 June 2016.
