Shared transport is an important element of the Department for Transport (DfT)’s Future of Transport programme, which aims to shape transport innovation and secure the UK’s position as a leader in the transport sector of the future.
It’s also one of the 9 principles in our Future of mobility: urban strategy.
In the first study, qualitative interviews were used to explore why current sharers choose to share and how they weigh up their decisions for different trips. A follow-up study used qualitative interviews to explore the attitudes of passengers towards shared mobility services and how this has been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The studies looked at current users of:
- car clubs
- web-based ride-sharing
- ride-pooling
- car-pooling
- demand-responsive transport (DRT)
Ipsos MORI were commissioned by DfT to undertake the first study in September and October 2019 and a follow-up study in December 2020.
