Child and maternal health statistics

Statistics and supporting information to help improve decision making when planning services for pregnant women, children, young people and families.

The Office for Health and Improvement and Disparities (OHID) publishes various statistics and intelligence resources about child and maternal health. They give data at local, regional and national level to inform the development and provision of health improvement and prevention activities and NHS services.

See also guidance on Child and maternal health data and intelligence: guide for health professionals.

Breastfeeding

See the Breastfeeding statistics page for current, earlier and archived statistics, as well as guidance and research on breastfeeding.

Pregnancy and birth

The Pregnancy and birth topic on the Child and maternal health section of OHID’s Fingertips data tool brings together data on factors related to conception, pregnancy and delivery, including breastfeeding indicators.

Health visitor service delivery

The Early years topic on the Child and maternal health section of OHID’s Fingertips data tool brings together indicators about health visiting services.

The data was collected through an interim reporting system, Children’s public health 0 to 5 years: national reporting, set up to collect health visiting activity data at a local authority resident level. Data is submitted by local authorities on a voluntary basis.

The Community Services Data Set (CSDS) will be used as the basis for these metrics in the longer term, once the data quality has reached a suitable quality.

Child development outcomes at 2 to 2 and a half years

The Early years topic on the Child and maternal health section of OHID’s Fingertips data tool brings together indicators on several themes.

The metrics provide local authority data on outcomes for children aged 2 to 2 and a half years, as measured by the Ages and Stages Questionnaire 3 (ASQ-3). The source data for these metrics is the interim reporting system, Children’s public health 0 to 5 years: national reporting.

The Community Services Data Set (CSDS) will be used as the basis for these metrics in the longer term, once the data quality has reached a suitable quality.

Child and maternal health profiles

The Child and maternal health section of the Fingertips tool brings together indicators of child health for local government and NHS areas across several different topics.
